Topics in Study Guides section

Postby tax_me » Sat Feb 27, 2010 7:38 pm

Hi,

Not sure if this is where this topic should belong. My apologies if this is the wrong section to post it in.

I wanted to ask if the topics that are discussed in the STUDY GUIDES section of this website i.e. Accounting sections and Tax (Part I & II), are reliable to read through? I have not read much of it but from what I have seen they seem right. So just wanted to ask if they can be relied upon when it comes to reviewing for technical purposes for SOA or UFE? Because from whatever I've read it is easier to go through these notes than to go back to the text book or the handbook sections. So if they are reliable than I would prefer just browsing from the notes posted here and review my technical quickly.

Also, I would like to make a suggestion. The admin/owner should also put up a section where it talks about topics that are most common on SOA and UFE. I know PASS and Densmore go through it but it would be helpful if we can find it here too and have some technical notes about each topic. So when it comes to reviewing the technical stuff people can just go through it quickly and go back to focusing on their case studies.

By the way, I know I am being selfish here since, whoever will be posting all that will be doing the work and make it alot easier for ppl like me. But nevertheless it is a suggestion, which could help increase traffic on this site.

Also, can anyone tell me where can I go and look for the major differences between IFRS and Current Cdn GAAP and differences between Current GAAS and the new Canadian Auditing Standards that will be adopted? If anyone can let me know this it would be of great help and will save alot of time from having to go through the entire handbook. If there isn't a source that can summarize all this and point out the differences between them than this can be another topic that can be added on to the Study Guides section of this site. This would make things alot easier for me and for fellow CA students.

Thanks in advance !!!

Thestudy guides are really meant to be a supplement to your other materials, as opposed to your primary source. Their main purpose is to help you get a better understanding of the underlying principles of accounting/tax/audit, rather than focus on the details. So, there is a bigger emphasis on 'why' than 'what.' So, while I can't confirm that every specific detail is correct, I can assure you that the high-level concepts are properly explained.

With that being said, your preparation for the SOA/UFE should really focus more on how to write cases as opposed to refining your technical knowledge. Once you pass the CKE, it is 'assumed' that you have enough technical knowledge required to be a CA. So, the purpose of the SOA/UFE is to determine whether you are capable of applying that knowledge.

Right now, I really don't have the time to expand in terms of the articles. However, come May/June, I will be adding articles. I also plan to do a serious of videos on case-writing.

The differences between the current auditing standards and the new Canadian Auditing Standards are nominal. In terms of the differences between existing Canadian GAAP and IFRS, I have a document that provides some useful comparisons, but I'm not sure I can post it on the site because I didn't author it. However, if you'd like to send me an email, I will forward it to you (stefano@myCAsite.com)
